Mr President, With all due respect I want to remind you that saving the environment of the Sri Lanka should be one of top priority of the government. As the president and minister of environment you are directly responsible for this duty.
Muithurajawela marsh lagoon complex is estimated to have originated about 5000 year BC. The daily high tide brings in seawater from the ocean into the wetland. Continuous mixing of these two waters over thousands of years, has led to a brackish, integrated coastal ecosystem that is biologically diverse and teeming with life. A variety of mangroves and other types of flora including medicinal plants are found alongside numerous types of birds, butterflies and fish, some of which are endemic. Crocodiles, monitor lizards, and Sri Lanka’s largest snake, the Python, are also native.
In recognition of the importance of these wetlands, it was declared as a sanctuary in year 1996 under the fauna & flora protection ordinance.
Dumping of waste to this sanctuary will destroy whole ecosystem which was created over thousand years. Most of the animals in land including natives, flora and fauna, eco diversity of the area will come to an end. It will be an irreversible insult to natural beauty of this country. This can be considered as a fatal crime against our mother land and you will be remembered as the culprit.
Please be kind enough to take necessary action to stop this mass destruction of environment before it is too late.
